Damage Reduction is an effect that is obtained from eating a Pear or drinking a defense potion. It makes you take less damage from any attack.

Damage reduction makes you take less damage from attacks, lava, and spikes.
Defense Potion[]
Defense potions give you the damage reduction effect. Defense Potions are crafted with a Water Bottle and a Pear. They will give the effect for 15 seconds
